Monastirs 9th century walls and its imposing Ribat tower, which overlooks a modern resort complex, is amazingly harmonious. Monastir captures that blend of the traditional and modern that characterises Tunisia. A marina nestled in the shade of the walls provides an enjoyable promenade as does the long avenue that offers the bluest of Mediterranean seas on one side and open air terraces of hotels, restaurants and coffee houses from where you can enjoy the view on the other. The town really comes alive on Friday afternoons and Saturdays, when the local weekly market is held.
The "monastery", after which the town was named, was built by an Islamic religious order in AD 797 to defend the town from roaming nomadic tribes and Byzantine warships. The fortress houses a lovely museum of Islamic art and artefacts.
Monastir has a small fishing port, a marina, a Medina and a regular Metro and bus service running between the town and the city of Sousse.
Monastir is 10 minutes from Monastir airport and 2 ½ hours from Tunis.
