Antalya, situated on Turkeys southern Mediterranean coast, also known as the Turkish Riviera, is rich in history and enjoys a superb year-round climate. Its an ancient city with an atmospheric old quarter, a busy harbour and some beautiful, traditional Turkish architecture. The backdrop to Antalya, the majestic Taurus mountains with their pine-scented forests, rising to 10,000 feet, are as stunning as Antalyas attractive restaurant-lined sea front.
Theres something for everyone in and around Antalya. Apart from the superb climate, theres the fabulous harbour, great shopping, vibrant nightlife and, on either side of the city, a selection of sandy beaches with crystal clear waters. Some hotels are on the centrally located Mermeli beach whilst others overlook the lovely Lara beach, some 6 kms from the city. And Antalyas international airport is only 10 kms away.
With its wonderful year-round climate, Antalya is a great place to visit at any time of the year. Winters are very mild and its usually dry and warm, with just the occasional shower, from November to March. From April to November, the weather is hot and sunny although resorts will be less crowded and less hot if you avoid July and August. The weather is perfect in May and June with long days and an ideal temperature. In September and October, the high season summer crowds have gone and the sea is at its warmest.
Antalya enjoys a great setting with its bustling centre and picturesque harbour whilst the shopping, restaurants and local nightlife are hard to beat. Theres an attractive sea front lined with restaurants and bars whilst in the picturesque old town youll find pretty cobbled streets, flower-clad houses and a selection of excellent fish restaurants. Theres also the wonderful Antalya museum with its fascinating exhibits of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman history in the Antalya region.
From small, family-run cafes to superb international restaurants, from kebab shops to sophisticated cocktail bars, Antalya has a great and varied selection of places to eat and drink to satisfy every taste. Theres something for everyone, including delicious local Turkish cuisine and restaurants serving dishes from around the Mediterranean and beyond.
Theres a wide choice of things to do and see and, apart from the coastal day cruises which are very popular, you can also try river rafting, a mountain jeep safari, horse-back riding and the Manavgat river tour. Must-see places to visit are Pamukkale, Perge & Aspendos, the sunken city of Aspendos and the unique region of Cappadocia.
There are bars and night clubs to appeal to all tastes in and around Antalya. From jazz to pop, from classical to rock, there is definitely something for everyone. For serious shoppers, Theres a huge array of shops and stalls selling everything from local spices to the finest leather jackets.
